Acree running for vacant District 9 seat Carol Acree, director of the Prince George County Crime Solvers, said she is running for the District 9 seat of the County Council so that she can the voice for the community. 63, of Upper Marlboro said her top priorities if elected are improving roads and traffic in south county, preserving the county southeastern rural tier and directing more resources towards keeping good teachers in local schools. Acree said she also wants to put her experience in grassroots organizing to work by gathering with other community leaders to share ideas and concerns. Acree is running to fill the seat occupied by Marilynn M. Bland (D) of Clinton, who is leaving this year because of term limits. This is Acree first time running for public office. Seven candidates, all of whom are registered as Democrats, have filed with the Board of Elections as of Tuesday to run for the District 9 seat. Also running are Tamara Davis Brown of Clinton, Ron Fisher of Brandywine, Mel Franklin of Marlton, Sydney Harrison of Upper Marlboro, Juanita Miller of Clinton and Catherine Taggart Ross of Clinton. No Republicans had filed to run for the seat as of Tuesday, according to the Maryland Board of Elections website. The filing deadline for the primary election is Tuesday. Primary elections are scheduled for Sept. 14, and the general election is scheduled for Nov. 2. Acree said her work with the Crime Solvers, a nonprofit organization that engages community members in working with police, has also given her a unique perspective on the public safety needs in District 9 and throughout the county. As a long time resident of the Williamsburg Estates community and president of the Rosaryville Citizens Association, Acree said she also has advocated at the county level for intersection improvements along Rosaryville and Woodyard roads and to keep population density requirements low in new residential communities in south county.
